Your Guide to Choosing Wedding Invitation Suite Pieces
A wedding invitation suite can be as simple as an invitation and reply card—or it can include several coordinating pieces that guide guests through an entire wedding weekend.
The right combination depends on your celebration, the information your guests need and how you plan to collect replies. This guide will help you decide which pieces belong in your suite.
Essential Invitation Suite Pieces
Wedding Invitation
The wedding invitation is the centerpiece of the suite and the formal announcement of one of life’s most meaningful occasions. It introduces the celebration, reflects its style and gives guests their first sense of the day being planned—whether it will feel romantic and intimate, timeless and traditional or joyful and relaxed.
Although the invitation should convey the significance of the occasion, its wording can remain beautifully uncluttered. The most important details belong on the invitation itself, while travel information, accommodations and other practical guidance may be placed on a separate details card or wedding website.
The invitation traditionally includes:
- Names of the hosts who could be the couple themselves
- Couple’s names
- Wedding date
- Ceremony time
- Ceremony location
- City and state
Outer Envelope
The outer envelope is the first part of the invitation suite guests will see. Before the artwork, paper or carefully chosen wording is revealed, the envelope signals that something special has arrived.
In addition to protecting the stationery inside, it includes each guest’s mailing address and may feature a printed or handwritten return address on the back flap. Coordinating envelope colors, thoughtful typography and guest addressing create a polished first impression while setting the tone for what awaits inside.
Professional guest addressing can save considerable time while ensuring every envelope feels polished and consistent with the invitation suite. For a more personal, hand-lettered presentation, you may also hire a professional calligrapher to address each envelope individually.
Reply Card
The reply card transforms an invitation into a shared celebration by giving guests a way to say, “We’ll be there.” As responses arrive, the plans begin to take shape: tables fill, meal selections are finalized and the people who will share in the day become part of the unfolding story.
In addition to asking guests to accept or decline the invitation, a reply card may request:
- The number of guests attending
- Meal selections
- Dietary restrictions
- Attendance at additional events
- A song request or personal message
Include a clearly stated reply-by date that allows enough time to finalize catering, seating arrangements and other details with your wedding professionals.
Reply Envelope
When guests are returning a printed reply card by mail, include a pre-addressed reply envelope with postage already applied. This small courtesy makes responding simple and ensures the card is returned to the correct person—whether that is the couple, a parent, the wedding planner or another designated host.
The destination address is printed or written on the front of the envelope, and the reply card is tucked inside without being folded. Using a coordinating envelope and postage treatment allows even this practical piece to feel like a thoughtful part of the complete suite.
If replies will be collected through a wedding website, a separate reply card can provide the website address, QR code and reply-by date. In that case, a reply envelope is not required. However, offering the option to respond by mail—along with a printed reply card and pre-addressed, stamped envelope—is a thoughtful courtesy for guests who may be less comfortable responding online.
Helpful Additional Pieces
Registry Card
A registry card lets guests know where the couple is registered and provides the information needed to find their gift registry. It may include a retailer’s registry website, a QR code, or both.
Keeping this information on a separate enclosure card ensures it is easy to find without adding unnecessary details to the wedding invitation itself.
Details Card
A details card keeps practical information from overwhelming the invitation.
It may include:
- Reception information
- Dress code
- Wedding website
- Transportation
- Parking instructions
- Adult-only celebration wording
- Other important guest information
If you have several details to share, direct guests to your wedding website for the complete information.
Accommodations Card
Include an accommodations card when hotel rooms have been reserved for your guests. It may provide:
- Hotel name and address
- Room-block name
- Reservation deadline
- Booking instructions
- Hotel telephone number or website
- Transportation information
Reception Card
A separate reception card is helpful when the reception takes place at a different location from the ceremony or when only certain guests are invited to the reception.
If everyone is attending both events and space allows, a simple line such as "Reception to follow" may be included on the invitation instead.
Directions or Map Card
A directions or illustrated map card can be useful when:
- The venue is difficult to locate
- Cell service is unreliable
- The ceremony and reception are at different locations
- Guests will be traveling between several wedding-weekend events
An illustrated map can also become a beautiful keepsake within the suite.
Wedding Weekend Card
For a destination wedding or multi-day celebration, a weekend card can list events such as:
- Welcome party
- Rehearsal dinner
- Ceremony and reception
- Farewell brunch
- Group activities
- Transportation departure times
Only include events to which every recipient of that particular card is invited.
Decorative and Finishing Elements
These elements aren't required, but they can transform individual cards into a beautifully coordinated presentation.
Envelope Liner
An envelope liner adds color, pattern or illustration to the inside of the envelope, creating a beautiful first impression the moment your invitation is opened. It can introduce a coordinating color, repeat an element from the invitation artwork or add an unexpected decorative detail that ties the entire suite together.

Inner Envelope
An inner envelope holds the invitation pieces and clearly identifies exactly who is invited. It can be especially helpful when inviting families, indicating whether children are included or letting a single guest know they may bring a companion.
Because it is placed inside the mailing envelope, the inner envelope does not include an address or postage. Instead, the invited guests’ names are written or printed on the front (or left blank). It also protects the invitation suite and adds a traditional, beautifully layered presentation when the envelope is opened.
Belly Band
A belly band wraps around the invitation and enclosure cards, keeping the pieces neatly arranged while adding another layer of color, texture or personalization to the suite. It may be made from coordinating paper, translucent vellum or another material selected to complement the invitation design.
The band is wrapped snugly around the assembled suite, with the ends overlapping at the back. A small piece of double-sided adhesive is placed between the overlapping ends to secure the band to itself—not directly to the invitation—allowing guests to slide it off or open it without damaging the stationery.
Vellum Wrap or Jacket
A translucent vellum wrap or jacket adds softness and texture while keeping the invitation and enclosure cards beautifully arranged. Because the design remains visible through the vellum, it creates an elegant layered presentation without concealing the artwork beneath it.
Vellum may be left simple for a clean, understated look or finished with ribbon, a belly band or wax seal.
Ribbon
Silk or satin ribbon adds color, softness and movement while giving the invitation suite a romantic finishing touch. It may be wrapped around the assembled pieces, tied in a delicate bow or paired with vellum or a wax seal for a beautifully layered presentation.
Ribbon is available in a variety of widths, colors and textures to complement the suite. Because knots and bows add dimension, they may affect envelope thickness, postage and mailing requirements.
Wax Seal
A wax seal adds texture, dimension and a timeless finishing touch to an invitation suite. It may be used to secure a vellum wrap or belly band, embellish an inner envelope or decorate the outside of the mailing envelope.
Traditional hot-wax seals are created individually by melting sealing wax directly onto the stationery and pressing a metal stamp into the warm wax. Pre-made adhesive wax seals offer the same decorative appearance but are formed in advance and applied with an adhesive backing. They are especially convenient when assembling a large number of invitations and can be placed more precisely without exposing the paper to melted wax.
Wax seals placed inside the mailing envelope are better protected during transit. When applied to the outside, their raised profile may require a nonmachinable surcharge and can still be damaged by postal sorting equipment.
How Many Invitations Should You Order?
Order one invitation suite per household, couple or individual guest—not one for every person attending.
In addition to your mailing quantity, consider ordering extras for:
- Last-minute additions
- Invitations lost or damaged in the mail
- Addressing mistakes
- Your photographer
- Your wedding planner
- Family keepsakes

- A future framed display
We generally recommend ordering approximately 10–15 extra suites. Ordering additional invitations later may cost more and could result in slight variations between print runs or paper batches.
Before mailing, take a fully assembled invitation to your local post office to confirm the correct postage and handling requirements.
